Buildings, whether residential or commercial, contribute a significant share (41.8%) of overall greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions in our community. Most of these emissions are due to space heating and provision of domestic hot water in those buildings. Between now and our target year of 2050, some existing buildngs will be replaced, and many more will be added. However, most of the buildings in our community today will still be here in 2050. Retrofitting those buildings, so that they use less energy, and so that the energy they use comes from non-emitting sources, is a top priority.

In January 2020, OEG presented to Guelph City Council the report Future-proofing our buildings through energy efficiency retrofits. This report examines the role of financing tools like PACE (Property-Assessed Clean Energy) as a means to remove barriers to eliminating the emissions from our buildings.
